A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in Melbourne.
A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts
The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Summer Swing
The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks prior to the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.
Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has competed in the primary tournament field.

Officials pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Open's main draw, surpassing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.
