The State of Texas Attorney General Sues Tylenol Manufacturers Over Autism Allegations

Legal Proceedings
The Texas Attorney General, who supports former President Trump who is running for US Senate, alleged pharmaceutical manufacturers of withholding safety concerns of Tylenol

The top legal official in Texas Ken Paxton is suing the producers of Tylenol, asserting the companies withheld safety concerns that the pain reliever presented to children's cognitive development.

The court filing follows four weeks after Donald Trump publicized an unsubstantiated connection between using acetaminophen - referred to as acetaminophen - throughout gestation and autism in children.

Paxton is taking legal action against Johnson & Johnson, which previously sold the drug, the only pain reliever suggested for pregnant women, and the current manufacturer, which currently produces it.

In a statement, he claimed they "betrayed America by gaining financially from suffering and pushing pills without regard for the dangers."

Kenvue says there is insufficient reliable data connecting Tylenol to autism spectrum disorder.

"These companies misled for generations, intentionally threatening countless individuals to increase profits," the attorney general, from the Republican party, declared.

Kenvue said in a statement that it was "very worried by the dissemination of inaccurate information on the security of acetaminophen and the likely effects that could have on the well-being of American women and children."

On its online platform, Kenvue also mentioned it had "consistently assessed the pertinent research and there is lacking reliable evidence that demonstrates a verified association between using acetaminophen and autism spectrum disorder."

Associations speaking for physicians and medical practitioners share this view.

ACOG has stated paracetamol - the main ingredient in acetaminophen - is a restricted selection for expectant mothers to address pain and elevated temperature, which can pose major wellness concerns if left untreated.

"In multiple decades of studies on the consumption of paracetamol in gestation, not a single reputable study has definitively established that the usage of paracetamol in any period of gestation leads to neurological conditions in offspring," the group stated.

The lawsuit mentions latest statements from the former administration in arguing the medication is reportedly hazardous.

Recently, the former president caused concern from health experts when he told expectant mothers to "struggle intensely" not to consume Tylenol when sick.

The US Food and Drug Administration then issued a notice that medical professionals should consider limiting the usage of Tylenol, while also declaring that "a causal relationship" between the drug and autism spectrum disorder in children has remains unverified.

Health Secretary RFK Jr, who oversees the Food and Drug Administration, had pledged in April to initiate "a massive testing and research effort" that would identify the source of autism in a matter of months.

But specialists warned that identifying a single cause of autism - considered by experts to be the result of a complicated interplay of genetic and environmental factors - would not be simple.

Autism spectrum disorder is a type of permanent neurological difference and impairment that impacts how individuals encounter and engage with the environment, and is diagnosed using medical professional evaluations.

In his legal document, the attorney general - aligned with the former president who is seeking the Senate - alleges Kenvue and J&J "willfully ignored and attempted to silence the science" around acetaminophen and autism.

The case aims to force the corporations "destroy any promotional materials" that asserts acetaminophen is reliable for pregnant women.

The court case parallels the grievances of a group of parents of young ones with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder who filed suit against the producers of Tylenol in recently.

A federal judge rejected the lawsuit, stating investigations from the plaintiffs' authorities was inconclusive.
