Norris Advances Nearer to Title as Max Verstappen Takes Las Vegas Grand Prix Victory
The McLaren driver now leads a 30-point lead over fellow driver Oscar Piastri with just fifty-eight points remaining in the final two races
The McLaren Lando Norris moved nearer to a maiden championship with runner-up position in the Las Vegas Grand Prix behind Red Bull's Max Verstappen
Norris currently heads teammate Oscar Piastri, who ended up in fourth place behind the Mercedes of George Russell, by thirty points heading to the second-to-last race in Qatar this coming weekend
The Briton will claim the title in the desert as long as he doesn't surrender more than five points to Piastri in Losail, or seventeen to Verstappen
Piastri, so strong in the first half of the season, has not finished on the top three for six consecutive events
"Verstappen had a good race. I erred early on and was overly aggressive on that first turn," stated Norris
"It's still a positive outcome to secure second. I've got to praise Max and Red Bull"
After Qatar, the final race of the championship follows in Abu Dhabi on December 7th
The main developments of among Formula 1's most prestigious races included:
Lando Norris maintained his progress towards the championship despite the victory to Verstappen
Piastri's challenging run of form persisted as his championship chances diminish
A excellent victory for Verstappen to maintain him in the title fight
Recoveries for both Ferrari drivers, after a tough qualifying, with Lewis Hamilton securing a point for 10th after beginning at the rear
Verstappen Remains in Championship Battle
Max Verstappen passes Lando Norris at the beginning after the British driver went off line at the opening turn
From the beginning, Norris was faithful to his claim that he was "not present to avoid risks" as he battled aggressively to protect his lead from starting first from Verstappen
But after an forceful cut in front of Verstappen to head off the Dutchman's attack on the inner line, the McLaren driver misjudged his braking point and ran deep into the turn
That enabled Max Verstappen to drive past into the first place while Norris also second place to George Russell
Through two VSC periods for some early incidents, featuring at the beginning when the Racing Bulls Liam Lawson made contact with Piastri, Verstappen slowly established dominance on the race
George Russell made an early pit stop for the more durable compound, but Lando Norris and Max Verstappen stayed out
Norris pitted five laps after the Mercedes driver and Max Verstappen ten laps later
The Red Bull driver was able to rejoin still in the first place, Russell having been failed to catch up on the Red Bull despite his newer rubber
Norris returned after Russell from his stop but after a several careful circuits to allow his tires to settle, quickly reduced his three-point-three second deficit to the Mercedes driver and overtook into runner-up position on lap 34
The British driver asked his engineer how to manage the rest of his event, effectively asking whether he should settle for second or attack
He was told to "chase down Max" but it quickly became apparent he had little opportunity. Max Verstappen was readily could defend against Lando's challenges, and in the final laps the gap increased significantly as the McLaren car started to experience a mechanical problem which has thus far not been defined
Despite losing almost three seconds a lap, Lando Norris was could hold off Russell because of the extent of the lead he had established while pursuing Max Verstappen
The Verstappen's sixth victory of the season - only one less than the two McLaren teammates - was achieved in emphatic style and maintains him in title contention, at minimum theoretically, even if he needs issues for Lando Norris in both remaining races to pass him
"It's still a significant margin, we consistently attempt to optimize all we've got," Max Verstappen said
"During the coming events we will attempt to win the event and at the end of Abu Dhabi we will know where we end up, but I'm extremely pleased of the entire team"
'Frustrating Event' for Oscar Piastri
Oscar Piastri started fifth but lost two positions on the first circuit after being clouted by Lawson, who was quickly eliminated of contention by a broken front wing
He followed Lawson's team-mate Isack Hadjar for the opening fifteen circuits before overtaking him on the Las Vegas Strip but lost out to Charles Leclerc, who he was able to repass during the tire change phase
Piastri finished behind Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who competed almost the entire race on the durable compound after pitting during the first virtual safety car, but was given a five-second penalty for a start-line infringement, which was not immediately obvious on replays
"It was a disappointing event from essentially beginning to end in certain respects," Piastri informed race broadcasters
Asked about how he would approach the final two races, he commented: "Simply try to put myself in the optimal situation I can. I obviously need several of things to favor me at this stage to win, but all I can do is ensure I'm in the ideal situation to take advantage if something happens"
Leclerc held on in sixth place, insufficiently close to gain from Antonelli's time penalty, while Carlos Sainz fell to seventh place at the flag, his Williams lacking the speed to compete with the leading outfits in the dry conditions, after his heroic performance to qualify third in the wet
Isack Hadjar secured eighth before the Sauber of Nico Hulkenberg and Lewis Hamilton
The seven-time title winner executed a flying start, up to thirteenth on the opening circuit and continued to move forwards
He became trapped in a DRS train with a group of other cars but was able to use his strong beginning to salvage a point following the poorest qualifying performance of his racing life
