Citizens have gathered across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as talks continued in Egypt over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"The violent adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state memorials until mid-October - after the end of the festive season - but events still were held throughout the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Put together by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the discussions revealed that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.

The representative explained the morning session finished without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.

He added that the talks are "tough and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are striving to reduce the gaps between the both parties.

Essential Points in Negotiations

  • A lasting halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies distribution
  • Future management of the region

Citizen Reaction

In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member lived through the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were murdered and many more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "No place appears as home now and until every captive return none of us will be secure."

"After we see everybody home returned, we can relax again. Then we can commence heal," she added.

Near the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their support for the relatives of the captives. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Activist a participant explained: "We need do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."

Research now regularly indicate that about seventy percent of Israelis want the war to end in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the site of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.

From there, the noise of military attacks and explosions could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.

In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and Nasr districts and in the east side district of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.

"As the dusk comes, the anxiety comes with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my little child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had taken in the remains of six people by the daytime, including a trio killed in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern city of that area said two more victims had been delivered. An individual was lost his life by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the south region, medical staff said.
