California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a prominent Democratic figure, has revealed that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections are over.
"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I said no," Newsom commented when questioned about seriously considering a White House bid post the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I'm not."
The governor's tenure as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any determination is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he said.
Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic
He has come to the forefront as a prominent adversary of the former president's team, employing his digital presence and championing a proposition that would boost the party's House seats in following Republican redistricting efforts. This action has drawn criticism from political opponents.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, claimed that Newsom does not care about Californians in a Sunday interview on Fox News. The secretary announced plans to cut government money from the state and threatened revoking the power to grant trucking licenses.
"I'm about to pull a significant sum from the state," he stated, after a recently reported fatal crash in the state involving an non-citizen commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and casualties.
The governor's team highlighted that the national authorities had renewed the individual's authorization multiple times, which enabled him to receive a CDL under federal law.
Duffy had before stated he was blocking $40m from California for failing to implement linguistic standards for CDL holders.
Strong Response from the Administration
"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office said in a last month's release countering the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."
Polling Data and Political Future
A recent poll showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and 48% of all registered voters said that Newsom must consider running for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has increased to an mean of a third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an average of previous highs to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, the governor remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.
"The thought that a person who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
