A Simple Declaration or Merely Out of Touch? The Hue Named 'Cloud Dancer' Chosen as Pantone's 2026 Colour.

Greetings! I'm incredibly excited to learn what color is set to be 2026. Fill me in on the details!

Brace yourself, as every year since 1999, Pantone selects a defining hue. This selection aims to capture the current cultural mood—informing everything from our collective sentiment and what we wear to how we design our living spaces. 2025's hue was the darker neutral "a coffee-inspired shade," following the gentle and peachy "Peach Fuzz."

The new selection, however, is particularly baffling. It is "Cloud Dancer," labeled as a "ethereal and neutral white."

Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, remarked that it is "a pivotal neutral tone … permitting all colors to stand out."

Well, Cloud Dancer sounds… wait, white? Could they be trolling us? Is white even a proper color?

How does one define the color of clouds? Milk? Although many view white as a color, every hue is at its core a range of visible light. It's present in a child's crayon box, so for practical purposes the answer is yes.

The question of whether Pantone is out of touch is more difficult to ascertain. The company states, Cloud Dancer combines easily with other colors, provides a calm backdrop, declares simplicity, and radiates quiet sophistication.

Responses from critics, on the other hand, has proven more critical. A number of observers have declared Pantone of being completely "tone-deaf." Fashion and trend forecaster Mandy Lee labeled it "underwhelming." Some have even likened it to coded promotion of controversial ideas seen in popular culture.

I see, hopefully they're blissfully unaware that this isn't the best moment to be explicitly championing the color white... So, how might someone who doesn't follow a runway apply this trend in daily life? I just painted my ceiling with white, does that qualify?

That definitely qualifies. This applies equally to your earbuds, tiles, or linen sheets.

It's funny you mention runways, since many recent shows have been bold and fuzzy, featuring naturally dyed materials on the stage.

White ensembles were present, as always, in luxury shows—from simple silk T-shirts to sleek suits. Celebrities and public figures have also been photographed in monochromatic white attire at major events.

The positive takeaway is: you probably already have items in this "subtle" designated shade. In the words of Pressman, Cloud Dancer "embodies a eco-friendlier decision for the eco-conscious," which might translate to avoiding the need to purchase new items at all.

FINALLY, a fashion trend for the inherently lazy. A fresh start, in a manner of speaking. A haven of monochromatic zen within the noise. Alright, I'm sold. Will you be creating a monochrome palette for your closet?

Absolutely not. Do you know how hard it is to get out tomato sauce stains from a light garment? I don't need additional cleaning headaches in 2026.

I do have a pair of once-white Birkenstocks, and those never go out of style.
