A Account of Surprising Kindness: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground

Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed I would book a place to stay after getting there, yet upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could bed down in the airport – only to discover the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate around the clock. Unsure of what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a bus into town and began walking near the casino, thinking it was a place to spend those hours somewhere that stayed open all night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, however, being a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

We could all use more folks with such compassion.

I must have looked out of place because a young woman saw me loitering in the city and asked if I was OK. I explained my situation and immediately she said I was welcome to sleep on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where the important interview would take place the next morning. She even offered me some free dinner: a leftover filled rolls she had from her work shift. This gave me the bathroom and somewhere safe and secure to spend the night.

Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she took as a woman letting a male stranger she’d just met stay in her room. Back then I operated under my own unawareness and not even thinking about things like that. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – and remain deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not attending that university, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of human compassion. My sincere desire is that karma has rewarded her act of kindness many times over. We could all use more folks like that woman.
